Most patients at Miller Orthodontics are in braces for 12 to 24 months. Simple cases can finish in as little as six months, and complex bite corrections can run 30 months or more. Your timeline depends on how far your teeth need to move, your age and how closely you follow your plan.
That's the honest range. Where you land in it comes down to your teeth, your bite and a few habits that are mostly in your hands. I'll give you your own estimate at your free consultation.

How long do braces take on average?
Most patients wear braces for 12 to 24 months. Simple cases can finish in about six months, and complex bite corrections can take 30 months or more. I'll give you your own estimated timeline at your free consultation.
| Type of case | Typical time in braces |
|---|---|
| Simple cases (minor crowding or spacing) | As little as about 6 months |
| Most patients | 12 to 24 months |
| Complex bite corrections | 30 months or more |
These are the same numbers on our braces questions and answers page. They cover braces. Retainers come after, and they're part of keeping the result.
What are the steps of the braces timeline?
The braces timeline has five steps: a free consultation and plan, getting your braces on, active treatment with visits every 6 to 10 weeks, finishing and taking the braces off, and retainers. Many patients go from consultation to braces in a single day.
Free consultation and plan
Plan for about an hour. We take photos and X-rays as needed, I examine your teeth and bite, and you leave with a treatment plan, an estimated timeline and your exact cost in writing.
Getting braces on
Many patients start the same day as their consultation. If you'd rather think it over, that's fine too, and we'll book a second visit.
Active treatment
This is most of the time. Most patients come in every 6 to 10 weeks, and appointments run 15 to 30 minutes. At each visit we check progress and make adjustments so the teeth keep moving toward the plan.
Finishing and braces off
When your teeth and bite are where they need to be, the braces come off. This is the fun visit. After a year or two of work, it's a good day, and then retainers keep the result in place.
Retainers
Teeth drift throughout life, braces or not. Most patients wear retainers full-time for a few months, then nights only, indefinitely. Your first set is included with comprehensive treatment, and our retainer protection plan covers replacements over the years after treatment. More on our retainers page.
What decides how long you wear braces?
Five things decide how long you wear braces: how far your teeth need to move and how complex your bite is, your age and growth, whether you need extractions or extra appliances, how well you look after your braces, and how often brackets break or visits are missed.
How far the teeth have to move
A little spacing closes faster than severe crowding. Bite problems like an overbite, underbite or crossbite take longer than straightening alone, because the upper and lower teeth have to be brought into the right relationship, not just lined up.
Age and growth
In kids and teens, growth can help us guide the jaws. Adults' bone has stopped growing, so treatment sometimes takes a little longer. It still works at any age, as long as the gums and bone are healthy.
Extractions or extra appliances
If teeth need to come out to make room, the spaces have to close, which can add time. Some cases also need extra appliances or elastics. Our post on whether braces require tooth extractions explains when and why.
How you look after your braces
This is the part you control. Wear your elastics as directed, skip hard and sticky foods, brush around every bracket and keep your appointments. Patients who do these things tend to stay on schedule. Tampa favorites like toasted Cuban bread and crusty subs are classic bracket breakers, so choose soft bread and cut things up.
Broken brackets and missed visits
Every broken bracket or missed appointment can set things back by weeks. Most breaks come from food, so our guide to what you can eat with braces is worth a read. If something does break, see what to do in an orthodontic emergency and call us.
How long do braces take for kids, teens and adults?
Teens usually fall in the standard 12 to 24 month range. Kids who need early treatment have a shorter Phase 1 round at about ages 7 to 10, and most children don't need it. Adults follow the same range but can take slightly longer because their bone has stopped growing.
Kids. A first orthodontic check by age 7 lets me spot problems early. Phase 1 is a shorter round of treatment for children roughly ages 7 to 10, done while they still have baby teeth, for issues like crossbites, severe crowding or a jaw growing off-center. If a child goes on to need braces later, we apply a credit from Phase 1 toward that second phase. If it's too early, we simply watch at no cost. See braces for kids.
Teens. This is the most common time for braces, because the permanent teeth are in and growth is still on our side. See braces for teens.
Adults. About half our patients are adults. Treatment works the same way it does for teens, though it sometimes takes a bit longer. Clear ceramic braces or aligners keep it discreet. See braces for adults or our braces overview.
Do braces take longer than Invisalign?
For most patients, the length depends on the case, not the appliance. Braces are fixed to the teeth and work around the clock. Invisalign only stays on schedule if the aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day.
Both cost the same at Miller Orthodontics, so the choice comes down to your case and your habits. If you're good about wearing aligners, they can be a great fit. If you know you'd leave them in a drawer, braces take that worry off the table. Read more about how long Invisalign takes and how Invisalign and braces compare.
How can you finish braces on time?
To finish braces on time, wear your elastics as directed, avoid foods that break brackets, keep your teeth clean, keep every appointment and call early if something breaks. Then wear your retainers so the result lasts. These are the habits that keep most patients on schedule.
- Wear elastics as directed. If I give you rubber bands, they're doing real work. Skipping them stalls progress.
- Skip the foods that break brackets. Hard, sticky and chewy foods are the usual cause. Cut food up and use a fork and knife.
- Brush and floss around the brackets. Healthy gums let teeth move the way they should.
- Keep every appointment. Our Tampa office has evening hours, Brandon is open Wednesdays and Apollo Beach is open Tuesdays, so there's usually a time that works.
- Call early if something breaks. Call (813) 427-2237. Our Tampa office is closed Wednesdays, so if it's urgent that day, call and we'll see you at another office.
- Wear your retainers after. That's how you keep what you worked for.
How much does the length affect the cost?
Treatment length is one of the things that sets the fee, along with how complex the case is. Most patients invest between $3,000 and $7,200. You get your exact cost in writing at your free consultation, and treatment starts at $300 down with 0% interest in-house financing.
Shorter cases that correct minor issues fall at the lower end of the range, and longer treatments with significant bite correction fall at the upper end. See fees and financing for payment options and discounts.
Frequently asked questions
How long do braces take?
Most patients at Miller Orthodontics are in treatment 12 to 24 months. Simple cases can finish in as little as six months; complex bite corrections can run 30 months or more. Dr. Miller gives you an estimated timeline at your free consultation, based on how far your teeth need to move, your bite and your age. Read the full timeline above for each step, from consultation to retainers.
How long do you have to wear braces as an adult?
Adults usually fall in the same 12 to 24 month range, though treatment can take slightly longer because the bone has stopped growing. About half our patients are adults, and there's no upper age limit as long as your gums and bone are healthy. Clear ceramic braces or aligners keep treatment discreet at work. Adult treatment works the same way it does for teens, and you'll get your own estimate at your consultation.
How long do braces take for kids and teens?
Teens typically fall in the standard 12 to 24 month range. For kids, Phase 1 is a shorter round of treatment at about ages 7 to 10, and when a child needs braces later, we credit Phase 1 toward that second phase. Most children don't need Phase 1. If it's too early, we watch your child's growth at no cost. A first check by age 7 is a good way to find out where your child stands.
Can braces come off early?
Not safely before the teeth and bite are in position. Finishing early only happens when the teeth move faster than planned, and that's my call based on what I see at your visits. The best way to stay on or ahead of schedule is to wear your elastics, protect your brackets and keep every appointment. Taking braces off before the bite is finished risks the teeth shifting back, which nobody wants after all that effort.
What makes braces take longer?
The main things are a more complex bite, extractions, age, missed appointments, not wearing elastics, broken brackets and poor brushing. Some of those you can't change, but most of the delays I see come from the last four. The sections above on what decides how long you wear braces and how to finish on time go through each one. The good news is that the habits that keep you on schedule are simple, and our team will remind you at every visit.
How often are braces appointments?
Most patients come in every 6 to 10 weeks, and appointments run 15 to 30 minutes. We schedule around school and work as much as we can. Our Carrollwood office in Tampa offers evening appointments, our Brandon office is open Wednesdays and our Apollo Beach office is open Tuesdays. Evening slots book up first, so schedule those early. You can be seen at whichever office is most convenient, and all three offer the same services.
Do braces take longer than Invisalign?
It depends on the case, not the appliance. For most patients the timeline is similar either way. Braces work continuously, while Invisalign needs 20 to 22 hours of wear a day to stay on schedule. At Miller Orthodontics both cost the same, so the choice is about your case and habits. Compare them on our Invisalign vs braces page.
How long do I wear a retainer after braces?
Most patients wear retainers full-time for a few months, then nights only, indefinitely, because teeth drift throughout life. Your first set is included with comprehensive treatment, and our retainer protection plan covers replacements in the years after treatment. Lost and broken retainers are the most common reason people lose their result. Learn more on our retainers page.
Does a longer treatment cost more?
The fee is based on how long treatment takes and how complex the case is, so longer, more involved cases fall at the upper end. Most patients invest between $3,000 and $7,200. You get your exact cost in writing at your free consultation, and treatment starts at $300 down with 0% interest in-house financing. Extended financing through HFD is also available, and we verify your insurance benefits at no charge before your visit.
